Crash Test Tata Nano - 0 STARS The first-ever independent crash tests of some of India's popular and important small cars have shown a high-risk of life threatening injuries in road crashes. All the cars selected by Global NCAP for testing in a frontal impact at 64km/h received zero-star adult protection ratings. The models tested included India's best-selling car, the Suzuki-Maruti Alto 800. The Tata Nano, Ford Figo, Hyundai i10 and Volkswagen Polo also underwent the safety assessment. Combined sales of these five cars account for around 20% of all the new cars sold in India last year. Global NCAP chose the entry-level version of each model and as a result none were fitted with air bags as standard. The results highlight major differences in the structural integrity of the vehicles teste...

  • Scientists showcase how to create low-cost solar cells using nanotechnology

A team of scientists at Stanford University, including a researcher of Indian origin, has shown how nanotechnology can be used to create crystalline silicon (c-Si) thin-film solar cells that are more efficient at capturing solar energy. The discovery can reduce the cost of solar energy production globally, they noted. Dr Shrestha Basu Mallick, working with her advisors Dr Mark Brongersma and Dr Peter Peumans, developed a new method of producing a cheaper and more efficient solar cell. The team used optical modelling and electrical simulations to show that a thin-film crystalline silicon solar cell with a 2D nanostructure generated three times as much photo current as an unstructured cell of the same thickness. This is because the nano-structured surface traps incoming light more effectivel...

  • Nanotechnology : The World of Nanotechnology Part 1

The magic of Nanotechnology is mind boggling. Untill the advent of nanotechnology detecting RDX was a near impossibility. One had to do physical check or use sniffer dogs. Both are unreliable. RDX is a very stable chemical compound and hence it is near non volatile. Even when kept in open one would find only parts per million molecules of RDX in air around it. However nanotechnology based detection devices could be made that could change the security scenario completely. Work in this direction is taking place under the national nanotechnology initiative in Indian scientific institutes. Disclaimer : This video is added here for educational purpose only.

The government of India has demonetised the current Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes, but it plans to replace these with new Rs 500 and Rs 2000 notes. Apparently the chip is so strong that one can track these Rs 2000 notes even if they are kept 120 metres below the ground level, according to the message. It also claims the chip will also help identify if too many of these notes are kept in one place and alert the relevant authorities. Thus the government’s new note will help curb corruption and discourage people from hoarding black money. Except if you read the message, you can figure out this is a hoax. Grammatical mistakes aside, the RBI’s own description for the Rs 2000 note does not mention this magnificent chip anywhere. Also at the press conference, this question was raised about the supposed GPS chip in these Rs 2000 notes and the so-called security measures. The RBI officials had dismissed these as false. One of the messages which has been shared with us reads like this. Note we’ve left the message as it, and not edited it for grammar. The Rs 2000 currency is designed keeping in mind to eradicate the black money issues using state of the art indigenous nano technology, every Rs. 2000 currency note is embedded with a NGC (Nano GPS Chip)

The results highlight major differences in the structural integrity of the vehicles tested. Max Mosley, Chairman of Global NCAP, said: "India is now a major global market and production centre for small cars, so it's worrying to see levels of safety that are 20 years behind the five-star standards now common in Europe and North America. Poor structural integrity and the absence of airbags are putting the lives of Indian consumers at risk. They have a right to know how safe their vehicles are and to expect the same basic levels of safety as standard as customers in other part of the world." In the Suzuki-Maruti Alto 800, the Tata Nano and the Hyundai i10, the vehicle structures proved inadequate and collapsed to varying degrees, resulting in high risks of life-threatening injuries to the occupants. The extent of the structural weaknesses in these models were such that fitting airbags would not be effective in reducing the risk of serious injury. The Ford Figo and Volkswagen Polo had structures that remained stable -- and, therefore, with airbags fitted, protection for the driver and front passenger would be much improved. Coinciding with the Global NCAP tests, Volkswagen has decided to withdraw the non-airbag version of the Polo from sale in India. Because of this, Global NCAP agreed to a request from VW to assess a version of the Polo that has two airbags fitted as standard as from now. Other manufacturers had the same opportunity. The protection proved much better and this airbag-equipped model received a four-star rating for adult occupant protection. Consumers are encouraged to check which version of the Polo they buy. - See more at: http://www.globalncap.org/crash-tests-show-indias-cars-are-unsafe/#sthash.WEEJ0RJ8.dpuf ►THANKS for taking the time to visit, I hope you SUBSCRIBE and enjoy the upcoming videos! This is because the nano-structured surface traps incoming light more effectively causing it to spend more time within the silicon material. The longer the light spends inside the solar cell – the greater its chance of getting absorbed. “Light absorption in crystalline silicon solar cells can be significantly enhanced by nanostructuring and this reduces the thickness of silicon required,” said Dr Basu Mallick. “This is important because it helps countries be competitive against imported cells and paves the way for new solar applications such as flexible or transparent cells,” she added.
